What are Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)?

An ETF is a fund made up of different securities. ETFs provide an efficient, low-cost way to diversify a portfolio. Investors can have exposure to the stock market, a specific industry, or even an investment style. ETFs come in a variety of styles including stocks, bonds, commodities, and currencies. For example if an investor wanted exposure to gold they do not have to buy gold bars. Instead they could buy the iShares Gold Trust ETF (IAU).
